In Loving
Memory of Master Michael DiPietro
May 19th, 1976 - July 11th, 2008
Truly the Best of the Best!
God looked around
his Garden and found an empty place.
He
then looked down upon his earth and saw your loving face.
He put his arms
around you and lifted you to rest.
His
Garden must be beautiful, he always takes the best.
He knew that you
were suffering, he knew you were in pain.
And
knew that you would never get well on earth again.
He saw your path
was difficult, he closed you tired eyes,
He
whispered to you "Peace be Thine" and gave you wings to fly.
When we saw you
sleeping so calm and free of pain,
We
would not wish you back to earth to suffer once again.
You've left us
precious memories, your love will be our guide,
You
live on through your children, you're always by our side.
It broke our
hearts to lose you, but you did not go alone.
For
part of us went with you on the day God called you home.
- Author Unknown -
We would love for you to share some of your thoughts
and memories of Master DiPietro with us. He was such an inspiration and
role model to so many. We would love to be able to share all of the memories
with the family.
Thank you.

this very day, your birthday, we celebrate the wonderful man that you were
and the extraordinary spirit that you have become. I know that you are with
us every day and are our special guardian angel. Know that you are greatly
missed and deeply loved -- more than you could ever imagine. Wherever you

seriousness of his illness. I offer my deepest sympathy and prayer for you
and your children and his family. Michael was a very high quality and
dependable individual , if there is anything I can do to help you, please
don't feel hesitate to contact me.

Master DiPietro was always my role model. I was thinking about stopping karate in 2008. I was on vacation in Florida when my mom had told me about Master DiPietro. I was then determined not to stop, because I know he would have been extremely proud to see me achieve my black belt. Even though he is not here with us physically, he is with us mentally, and will always be opened to my heart.

To the
Family of Master Michael DiPietro,
I never met Michael but when I heard about his illness from his Dad, Michael
became a priority in my prayers. I would always ask about Michael's condition
because I was experiencing the same thing with a family member. God has a
special purpose for each one of us and I am sure you know that your son, father
and brother was put on this earth to touch so many people and leave such a
lasting impression. I lost my brother, who was loved and respected by so many,
to the same disease around the same time. Know that your loved one will
continually live in your hearts and the memories will be with you always. I know
it is hard to understand, but earth has no sorrrow that God cannot heal. God
Bless all of you and know that others are praying and lifting you up to God for
strength to carry on. When those hard times come, it is alright to cry about
someone who is gone too soon but if you ask God, He will give you peace.

ever know. Joe is going for his two month check up on Friday and I know all 'the

Please check in as we miss you and think of Michael's great accomplishments this

It’s been a year since you left us, since God has taken my hero away.
The pain still burns badly; I remember it like it was yesterday.
All of the What ifs? All of the Why’s? They say everything happens for a reason,
Yea! Well not I my eyes.
In my Eyes I still see you, Smiling, Laughing , even Walking on the Beach.
Once in a while, you talk to me, and Hug me in my Dreams.
In my dreams you told me, you’re good, you’re fine, actually you feel great.
It’s very comforting knowing this, but without you here, my heart still aches.
Maybe I’m greedy, in fact maybe I’m selfish,
I can go on all day talking about how much I WISH
I WISH God realized how much we all will mourn,
I WISH God Did Not decide he needed you more.
I WISH God would have just allowed us find the cure for cancer,
because obviously love alone was not the answer.
You were loved so much by everyone, but this I’m sure you already know.
If love alone could have cured you, I wouldn’t be crying and writing this poem.
I WISH God realized how many Lives you actually touched.
I WISH God realized how much we need you here with us.
But the more I sit back, and the more I wish,
I see that God did realize all of this.
You see, God blesses everyone with a special Angel once in a while.
This Angel accomplishes many amazing things to enhance other lives, and just the
thought of them would make you Smile.
God seen that this one Angel had gone Above and Beyond,
This Angel accomplished more extraordinary acts in 32 years than most men had
ever done.
A Gorgeous wife, 2 Beautiful sons,
investment’s, a career he built from the ground at age 21.
A Master in martial arts, thousands of Students, I can just go on and on.
That’s just a small fraction of what this Angel had accomplished.
He’s done more for me than I could ever imagine, how could I be so selfish?
God took notice to all of the great deeds this angel had come to own,
He seen this Angel exceeded his job here, and figured it was time to come home.
I’m so glad that I knew him, I’m so thankful God gave us this special Angel.
For him our love will forever grow. I’m just proud to say he is my Family. I’m
Honored to say my Angel is Michael DiPietro.
I Love you Mike.

Micheal,
Having the opportunity to get to know you was a blessing for me, I am very
grateful to have had that experience. You taught me how to love and respect
those around me, you showed me that being strong was not just an outward
appearance, it meant patience and persistence which you worked at every day.
Seeing you push through what almost seemed like a brick wall was a lesson to all
of us and theres not a day that goes by that i do not think of you and your
family. i have learned over the past few years that it could always be better
but it can definitely be worse, because of you and your family i have realized
that life is to short and to always stay positive no matter how hard it gets.
You are a remarkable and unforgettable man, you not only touched my life but
also my family as well. you will always stay in my heart, thank you for becoming
such a great friend. love always Angela Oliva

Master
Dipetro was that one special peson I could always count on to make learning
Karate fun. He was the one who gave me the courage to be able to overcome my
anger and be where I am today. His inspiration led me as well as many others to
a path of self-defense and self-control through the way of becoming one with
nature. I am a student at his school, even though he is long since desiesed, he
would alwaays come through being more and more kind every day. He would come as
a grace ful instructor in ways that are small but can really make a person be as
nice as him (if it is possible) in ways such as remembering everyones names and
encouraging everyone in his school.
My best regards and may you rest in peace,

Michael -
Although I was only Nicco’s age, I can still remember Grandmom Masciantonio walking me to Methodist Hospital. I was so excited. We stopped on the street and grandmom told me to look up. When I did, I saw mommy sitting in the window and she waved. I knew she was with my new, little brother and I couldn’t wait until the two of you could come home. I was a big sister now. I was so proud. That sentiment followed me throughout my entire life. For instance, when you were a toddler and I was the only person who could decipher your “special language,” it was the greatest feeling. I felt so important. No one knew that “bo” meant “milk” and “doctor whosits” meant “The Dukes of Hazzard.” Only I did, and I loved every minute of it. It was as if you chose me to represent your world and I was so happy for that opportunity. You have always shared yourself with me and I am eternally grateful. As you grew into the man, I, along with so many people, know and love, I’ve never been more proud. This world is a much better place for your having been a part of it. I am in a much better place in my life because you were a part of it. My life would not be complete without you. I am honored to have had your love for 32 years. I am so very blessed, for there is no other brother (other than Steven) that I could love more. Thank you for being you. You are an amazing gift from God. So, even though I am completely heartbroken that you are not here with us, today, I will try my hardest to not give in to the pain. Instead of shedding tears of sadness, I will shed tears of joy. I will celebrate your life, because without you, I would not be who I am -- your sister. May 19, 1976, was one of the most memorable days of my life. I will cherish it forever. I will celebrate you forever. I miss you. I love you. I will see you again. Love, Dana

It
is true that in life we encounter special people who touch our lives and the
lives of others in a unique and heartwarming way. In 2004, I started dating my
wife Dana. On Easter Sunday of that year, I had the pleasure of being introduced
to her family the DiPietro’s. By no stretch of the imagination, this was no easy
task. I was the new guy and breaking into a very tight family circle was a
challenge to say the least. Ever the protector and family guardian, my first
experience with Michael was quite memorable. Let’s just say, Michael lets you in
when he is ready or sometimes not at all. Either way it’s black or white…no gray
areas.
I was lucky enough for him to let me in…but not without work. I realized that
Michael found me funny because I could easily take a joke or a bust from anyone,
him especially, and at the same time make fun of myself. As time went on, I went
from the guy that Dana was bringing around, to Dana’s boyfriend to Michael’s
friend. Kind of like a black belt school for dating and relationships in the
Michael DiPietro world. Believe me the tests were endless and a uniform didn’t
come with my membership. We discovered that we had a lot in common, believed in
the same things and had similar outlooks on life. I soon began looking at him
like the older brother that I always wanted. It was hard not to do. The subtle
lessons that he taught me were invaluable. Through him, I learned how to be a
husband, father, son and friend. Michael had many students and families not just
those on the martial arts floor or in South Philly. If you are reading this you
are probably a member of one of those families in one way or other.
When I asked my father-in-law for Dana’s hand in marriage, I wanted to do it
right. As everyone knows, the DiPietro’s are a close knit group. For that
reason, I waited until Big Mike, Michael, Steven and Loretta we assembled at
Michael’s house one night before Michael and Abby were getting ready to go out
to a friend’s wedding. When they were all in the same room I posed the question
to Big Mike with his two wing men and Loretta standing by. My friends, you don’t
know nervous until you try to work a yes out of all of the DiPietro’s at the
same time. But to my credit and through the grace of God, I got one unanimous
green light led by Michael and the rest is history.
Together Michael and I took trips down the shore, enjoyed casino nights, played
late night card games, devoured midnight snacks comparable to small Thanksgiving
dinners, went to Phillies games, spent lazy Sunday afternoons watching the
Birds, laughed at comedy shows, checked out movies, boxing, UFC, enjoyed
dinners, family parties and just all out fun times and big laughs.
We worked on projects together, confided in each other and were able to just
enjoy each other’s company without feeling that every second of our visit or
hang out had to be filled with chatter. Some of the best lessons that he taught
me were my observations of how he handled a situation or addressed an issue.
In actuality, Michael, like one of his favorite movie genres the mob, had “Five
Families,” his biological family, his neighborhood/friend family, his extended
family, his karate family and the family that he created with Abby, Michael and
Nicco. Regardless of his family’s situation or makeup he was there for them to
guide, help, love and protect. His love was unconditional and his loyalty,
values and beliefs never waivered or could ever be compromised.
When he was sick, I tried to make him smile as much as possible or as much as he
wanted to. At times, I was probably a pain in the butt. However, I believed in
him and the only medicine that I had to offer was laughter to a man who had
given me so much. To his credit and because of his strength and determination he
always had a smile in his heart regardless of his pain or the situation at hand
or the corny joke that I delivered.
Michael is my role model, my hero, my strength and courage that I draw from in
tough times and my smile in happy ones. He was right, “everyday is a blessing
and every meal is a feast.” If you don’t think so you’re mistaken and hopefully
you will open your eyes and realize this fact before it is too late. The things
in this world that we take for granted we will one day miss. And the things that
we don’t do and ultimately regret we can never change or get back. For me, off
of the top of my head, I’ll miss the phone calls on Friday from Mike and my
dinner “wingman” at my mother-in-law’s dinner table. So enjoy the little things,
don’t sweat the small stuff and remember to tell the people who you love that
you do. Knowing that every time we ended a visit we said goodbye with a hug and
a kiss on the cheek gives me comfort.
Michael may be gone physically but he’s still here in many ways that go beyond
the physical barriers that we as people have become entrenched in and accustomed
to and sometimes can’t see beyond. Over the past year, during some of our
family’s most trying and scary times, Michael gave us the gift of understanding
what it means to be a real family built on a foundation of love, a love that is
unconditional and never ending. As such, he will live in our hearts and minds
forever.
I know that when I tell my son about what it means to be a man, what it means to
have courage, give respect, what it means to love, what it means to work hard
and be the best that you can be for the benefit of others, I know that every
example will begin with me telling him a story about my beautiful friend, my
brother, his uncle…Michael DiPietro.
Sometimes I dream
That he is me
You've got to see that's how I dream to be
I dream I move, I dream I groove
Like Mike
If I could Be Like Mike
Again I try
Just need to fly
For just one day if I could
Be that way
I dream I move
I dream I groove
Like Mike
If I could Be Like Mike
Love,
Nicky

I just found out through the WTSDA website link about the death of Master
DiPietro. I was very saddened. Although I had not seen him in over 15 years...I
will not forget him. We were Cho Dan Bo's together, tested for Black Belt and
were promoted together. I remember our Dan number were only 2 numbers apart
(only because I was older). I remember him as a very sweet young man and am not
surprised that he is so loved and missed. I am sad for his young family as his
children appear to be the same age as mine. Please accept my condolences. I hope
you are comforted, as I am, that he touched so MANY lives and lead many many
students through the right path in life. His influence as a teacher and father
will long be remembered. From this day to the ending of the world,
"But we in it shall be remembered-
We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
For he to-day that sheds his blood with me
Shall be my brother."

We are deeply hurt and saddened by the news of Master DiPietro. I remember the
first time walking into your studio back in 1998 for the women's kickboxing as
taught by a young, beautiful & talented black belt named Abby. That evening, I
met the wonderful young couple who joined our community to educate, motivate and
inspire via martial arts. Over the years, you taught my son and all of your
students valuable lessons reaching far beyond those white walls and
multi-colored belts. Those lessons and memories will forever live inside the
hearts and minds of the community you helped shape. For that you should be most
proud and find the strength to continue on the path Michael paved. He will be
missed by all those who were lucky enough to call him "Master".

I was a former student of Master DiPietro. He taught me the value of hard work,
not giving up, and pursing your dreams. I always enjoyed his classes and his
lessons of never saying, "I give up." I learned how to push myself in the right
direction because of him. I know the instructors and students miss him very
much. Since the day I left his classes, I have been achieving many obstacles and
goals because of him. Sincerely. Alexander S. Pondok

I stumbled upon this site yesterday and I was shocked and extremely saddened to
see the news. I knew Michael and Abby from Shin,ECDT many years ago. I have many
fond memories of Michael inside and outside of Karate. Michael was always mature
beyond his years and was extremely humble for someone so incredibly talented. It
was indeed an honor to have been friends with such a person. I wish I would have
known sooner to pay my repects. Abby, please know that you and your family are

My husband Dave and I attended ECKI for the last couple of years that we lived
in Pennsylvania, before moving to Michigan where we currently live. Being out of
state, we only learned of Master DiPietro's passing this evening. It hit both of
us very hard. The news was so very unexpected. We have incredibly fond memories
of Master DiPietro and our time at the school. Our hearts go out to his wife and
family, Mr. DiPietro, Ms. Westraad, Mr. Stumm and the rest of the WCKI family. I
can only imagine how difficult the past year has been. Undoubtably, Master
DePietro is loved and missed by countless people - including us. With Love, Dave

I had met him through my sister Jowayne and Eddie and had the pleasure of meeting him and Abbey in Hawaii on their honeymoon. I have known Michael for 20 years. First, young kids from Shin karate to becoming family- and sharing special times together. I remember the young Michael and Abby years at Shin. They were head over heals in love (and boy can I think of some funny stuff). I was lucky enough to always be around them at tournaments, clinics, and family events. Abby and I were in each other's wedding, and had the blessing of having our boys all close in age to grow up with. It is so hard to put in words the sorrow I feel for the loss of my friend, and for the heartache I feel for my best friend Abby. I was blessed to know him as a karate man and a family man, something I treasure for the rest of my life! (Ab, after our talk on the bench I couldn't stop thinking about you and this website. As soon as my computer was up and running this was the first thing on my mind.) I am glad that you and the boys have this website to remember your husband and their father. Family and Friends Forever, I love ALL of you----Jowayne

I have been sitting here at my computer for three hours reading your comments over and over and crying. There are times when I am almost paralyzed by my grief, and this is one of those times. I can not stop reading these wonderful tributes to my husband. The more I sit here the more I cry, but I can not pull myself away from the computer. I would like to express my gratitude to everyone for truely appreciating my husband and for taking time to write your comments. This is a wonderful gift for my children. These comments will help my children know what kind of man their father was, and what kind of men they should strive to become. My husband put his heart and soul into every aspect of his life. He was a generous, genuine, authentic human being. I hope he knows how much he was/is respected, loved and appreciated. Michael, My life will never be the same without you. Every day is a struggle. The smallest tasks seem impossible for me to accomplish. I hope you will give me the strength I need to make it through one day at a time. I hope that one day for the sake of our boys, thath I can be a happy person again. When I look at pictures of us/me smiling, my heart aches. I no longer know that smile, that feeling or that person in the picture. I am a different person without you, and I do not know who that is yet. Please continue to watch over us and protect us. I love you and I miss you so much it hurts. Michael and Nicco also miss you and talk about you everyday. We will continue to talk about you and remember you for the rest of our lives. Rest in peace my love. Until we meet again. Love Always, Abby

Dear Abbey, Dana, and the Dipietro Family and extended Friends, I was very much sadened and surprised to hear of Michaels Passing. I had no idea that he was ill. Someone who is so incredible and dynamic you never do suspect illness. I have been out the WTSDA loop for quite awile now. I have memories of Michael at Shin Karate when I was a white belt. Micahel was then a blue belt then along with Brian Fisher. Dana I went to Goretti with you I was a sophmore then and you were a junior. Abbey, you married the "BEST of the BEST" and he will never be forgotten. How could I, he opened the Shin Karate commerical punching away! Michael was always kind even when others were arrogant about there abilities. He always had a funny comment to say and we all would laugh. The World of Tang Soo Do has suffered such a loss that is so profound that it will take region 8 along time to over come what has happened. Clearly Michael was a master of all things, family, friends, Karate. My thoughts and prayers are with you all. I wish I would have known so I could have paid my respects at Michaels services. May God bless you all.I to know the pain of losing a part of your family. I lost my daughter years ago. They are gone but never forgotten. Take care of yourselves. Sincerly, Karen Graham - White

Dear DiPietro Family: How sad we were to learn of Master DiPietro's passing. My family and my church had been praying for him from the start of his illness. Master DiPietro was truly a Master of his art and of his life. He was so well loved by the students and the parents. He touched so many lives in a good and positive way. The title was truly his. I have a theory that people like him are angels that God has sent here to teach us about love for one another and respect and when they have done God's purpose, they are taken back to be with Him. Even though he will not be here for his children, he has left them a great legacy of people who will tell them stories of what a wonderful man he was and of the love he had for them. We must all 'pass it on' what he has taught us. He will be missed very much. God Bless you all and give you comfort at this time. Josh Bobiak and Mimi (grandmother) Bobiak

Just the other night my family and I were showing my son a video from 1996 region 8 championships and it brought back alot of old memories. Master DiPietro was of course in the video kicking butt with Brian Fisher, John Trotta, and Tatyiana B. I always tried my hardest to be as good as them. Anytime you saw Master DiPietro you saw Brian Fisher. He was a great man who was very talented and patient. Even though I was from a different school he did teach me alot. He will be greatly missed and honored in all the days to come. Jenna Ping- Star Karate.

Master DiPietro meant so much to my family. My daughter "Gabby" was # 57. I remember the day when I first brought her in for her free lesson. She was so shy. It makes me smile to think about that first meeting. Master DiPietro helped my daughter to become the confident person that she is today. He touched so many lives. Mine included. It's sad when a person so young moves on. But Master DiPietro continues to live on through all of us. My family and everyone that he came in contact with. I will always consider my family to be a part of your family and the East Coast Karate Institute family. With Love, Don Huggins, Gabby Huggins & Maria Huggins

To Abby and boys: Technically, Monica and I only met Michael two times - the first on our belated Jamaican Honeymoon and later when we met in Las Vegas for a mini vacation. But despite these short visits, we became fast and great friends. We've made lasting memories - including Michael's classic "hot pants" comment and the Coyote bar in Las Vegas where the DePietro's and Castillo's lost a few too many brain cells. Despite the distance and relatively short time together, I feel a lasting connection and bond with Michael. We had a lot in common, and would consul each other on the difficulties of running a successful business, while maintaining our obligations to our wives and families. Michael was clearly a devoted father, husband, and a very strong and special person. I feel honored to have gotten to know him, even for the short period of time it was. I will miss him dearly. I cannot begin to express my sadness for you, Abby, and your boys. I know what it's like to lose a father at a very young age. But know that a father's impression on his children - however brief -- is something that lasts in his offspring forever. Michael was a special soul. A strong man. A Great father and husband. I believe truly that - even from his resting place outside of this natural world -- he'll continue to have a spiritual and even physical impression on his children and you Abby. Please let us know if there is anything we can do. We will miss Michael terribly but will also celebrate his life and be thankful for the opportunity to have met him. With Love, Brandon and Monica Castillo Sacramento, CA

What a GREAT man and what a shame for this world to no longer have him in it. We were only at ECK for 2 years butin those two years, he touched my children's lives more than he even imagined. He ALWAYS made the kids feel important and he helped those of us, at the time, that were single parents work with our boys when they needed a a "fatherly" figure to set them straight. I am so sad for his family to have to go on missing such a wonderful man. I can only thank his family for sharing him with so many of us in the Glen Mills area. When I said goodbye last year to Master DiPietro when I was moving to Europe I could have never thought that it was a farewell. I moved last year to europe, and missed them all, but Master DiPietro most. when I was practicing for my red belt, he said "you will not leave till you know bassai with your eyes closed" I could barely believe it, but after 1 hour, I got it. he is the best karate teacher.. or master.. We which to extend our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Master DiPietro. It has been a privilege to have known such a wonderful man and mentor to so many children. Our son,Andrew started karate as a Little Dragon and moved on to receive his black belt in 2006. During this time,Master DiPietro was an excellent teacher and mentor to Andrew. He taught Andrew disciple, respect and the importance of hard work but more importantly is cared about him as a person. We believe that Andrew is the person he is today in part due to his training with Master DiPietro. No words can express our gratitude. The Lang family

As a student he was my mentor, Master DiPietro. As my friend he was Michael. Michael knew my spiritual side, in fact, karate has enhanced my spirituality but right now I just have to say I’m damn mad at God. He has taken a grandson, a son, a brother, a husband, a father, a teacher, mentor and a friend. Apparently, God felt this stage of Michael’s life was complete because we all walk away today with something special Michael gave to each of us which we will never forget and that was Michael himself. After Michael was diagnosed, I wanted to give him words of encouragement and comfort. I told him he has been through many tests in his life. This was one more test from God. I said this may be a test of your faith, marriage, morality or courage. We may never know but never the less it is just a test. I have been trying to get my head around this situation since I received the telephone call from Jolene then I just realized last night the test wasn’t for Michael. The test is for us. This is a test of our faith, our morality and our courage. Michael has touched many lives in so many aspects. I was honored to know a man with so much integrity, who was extremely humble and knowledgeable for such a young person. Michael may have lost the battle to cancer but he didn’t give up the fight. He did his best. He fought to the very end, giving his best. This is all anyone can ask of a person and he passed his test. So, Loretta the gentleman who told you it is like marbles that fell to the floor. He is right we have to pick one up at a time and go on, keep our faith, live life like Michael would want us to do. I can hear him now saying to all of us “Thank you for this but it really wasn’t necessary”. But yes, Michael, it is necessary and thank you for your love, guidance and the courage you taught us to continue our lives. Helen “Some people come into our lives and quickly go; Others stay for awhile and leave footprints on our hearts, And we are never, ever the same.” Flavia

Master Michael DiPietro was a great part of my life. He helped me through many hardships. He also helped me accomplish goals I thought were impossible. He was a very dear friend. I am very sad he was not able to see me get my black belt, but I will push on to achieve it. He was the first one to talk to me about achieving that big of a goal. He was a strong, good, and willful man. I know he lies in Paradise painless. I miss him but I know he is happy. Rest in peace, Master Michael DiPietro. Evan Mazmanian

When we first met Michael nearly 6 years ago, we could never have imagined we would be attending his funeral such a short time later. We were both so impressed by this confident young man with a warm smile and a great way with children. We saw our son Evan blossom under his guidance and care. Although Evan is now training with Stephen in the Edgemont studio, Michael remains a strong influence in his life and his desire to become a black belt. As many have said before, there are no words that can express our sympathy to the DiPietro and Stumm families and to the entire ECKI family. I have know Michael since he was nine years old...we were a part of the Shin Karate and WTSD family growing up and like in many families there are ups and downs...we definitely had our share over the years. I am truly thankful that during the past four years we reconnected and I had the opportunity to get to know Master DiPietro. He grew into an incredible man; he had a dream and a vision for what he wanted his life to be and he went for it...with his determination, hard work AND the help and support of family and his TSD mentors he was able to make his dream a reality. In doing so he not only accomplished a tremendous goal for himself --- he also was in a unique position to assist many children, adults, and families (his own and those he encountered in TSD) in doing the same for themselves as is evident throughout this tribute as well as during his memorial services. No matter what obstacles and difficulties he faced over the past 12 months --- he never lost his ability to truly and fully be there for others --- those he loved, who loved him, looked up to him, called him friend, etc. In a life that is already admirable, this demonstrates a level of selflessness and dedication to others that I hope will remain an inspiration over the years to come. We may no longer have him with us physically on this earth YET the life he lived in his 32 years and how he modeled for others a courage in life and even in the face of death can remain with us always. May you rest in peace Michael; may your family and the TSD/ECKI families hold on to the memories, the lessons you shared, and the perseverance you demonstrated in the weeks and months and years to come. While it is sad to no longer have you with us all, I find comfort in the image of you and Massaroni in heaven together --- may we all be reunited some day! Respectfully, Faith Gordon-Mazur

We were blessed to have Master DiPietro in our life. His positive attitude and encouraging words helped us to reach our goal of black belt. He taught us to always reach for the stars. He was a great mentor and leader who made us feel like family. It is hard to lose a member of the family that so many people looked up to. Eulogy Michael DiPietro, Jr. by Nate Gordon We are here today to celebrate the life and successes of Michael Di Pietro, Jr., to many of us, Master Di Pietro. I spoke to Father Jim this week about what I would say. He requested that I tell you something funny about Michael. I couldn’t think of anything so I called two of his close friends. Funny thing is, they couldn’t either. Michael was a very serious and focused young man. I first met Michael at Shin Karate, right here in South Philadelphia. We were students together. He was a very young boy and I was in my mid 30’s. I had the honor and pleasure of watching him grow. Our relationship constantly changing; from students together, to becoming his instructor, later his mentor, and at times to being mentored by him. I ask you today, do you judge a man by the number of years he lived, in this case only 32, or do you judge him by how he lived those years? I believe it is the latter. Michael wore many hats over the course of his short life. He was a loving son to Michael and Loretta, a loving brother to Dana and Steven, a faithful husband to Abby and a dedicated and caring father to Michael and Nicco. He was a successful businesman. But I knew him best as a martial artist; a practitioner of Tang Soo Do. I knew him as a competitor, a winner, a champion, and a warrior. Someone who always gave his best. Someone who would never quit. As a young boy Michael trained under two 2nd degree Black Belts: John Godwin and Louis Marvil. He became part of an elite group known as the East Coast Demo Team. I believe this experience had a profound affect on his life, evidenced by his naming his own karate schools East Coast Karate. Michael trained with many of the top competitors from our Region, to name a few, Master Brian Fisher, who was like his Tang Soo Do brother, Sal Convento, and Master Louis Castelli. Together they dominated the competition in our Region and in the World. I recall one Regional Championship where he should have won the coveted Regional Cup. He had placed 1st in fighting, 1st in forms, and even though he had the best weapons form earlier in the day, he only placed 3rd. If you did not notice the blood seeping through his white uniform pants, you would have never known he had accidentally stabbed himself in the thigh with his sword. He did not flinch or miss a beat. That was the kind of focus and intensity he had. He was a competitor, a winner, a champion, and a warrior. He met and fell in love at Shin Karate with Abby, and married the woman he loved and adored. He shared with me once how he had watched his father periodically struggle financially in life, and how he planned on making a difference for his family. He opened his own karate school and with a little help from me and a lot of help from Master Godwin developed one of the largest single schools in the World Tang Soo Do Association. At our association’s last kid’s camp he had 150 Blue and Black belt students attend from his schools. Without a doubt his greatest love became his two sons Michael and Nicco. You could see his face light up whenever he spoke of them. About a year ago, Michael found out that he had testicular cancer and that tumors had spread throughout his body. He did not run from the disease. Like the warrior he was, he attacked it. To his last breath he fought a champion’s fight. Three months ago when we talked he told me he had trained everyone on what they needed to know: Abby, his father, his brother Steven, brother-in-law Eddie, Jolene and his other instructors. He said that everything was in order. Two months ago when we talked he said he wanted to go to the World Championships which were held last Friday and Saturday, to say goodbye to Grandmaster Shin and the Masters he had trained with and had come to love and respect. His fear was that he did not want to leave his sons because every time he left them they were afraid he would not come back. Just a couple weeks ago he was out running 3 miles at a time. And then the disease attacked again, and Michael fought on. He decided to try a radical new treatment. And during this battle he passed. At the last two Master’s Clinics Michael shared a hotel room and help mentor another gifted student of mine, Rob Massaroni. Rob died a little over a year ago at the age of 29. It was as devastating then, as this is now. Someone wrote me a story back then about taking a loved one to a cruise ship where they were going to depart on a fantastic vacation. As they stood there they were amazed at the sight of the ship. It seemed gigantic. They touched it and when the horns blasted for departure they could hear it. Their friend stood at the rail waving goodbye as the ship left dock. The ship became visually smaller and smaller as it got further and further away. Eventually, the ship disappeared into the horizon. However, even though it could not be seen; even though it could not be touched; even though it could not be heard; that ship still existed. Michael has left us physically, never to be seen, touched or heard again. Helen Keeler wrote, “What we have once loved we can never lose. All that we love becomes a part of us!” Michael has physically gone, however he still exists in our hearts and minds. His spirit and our memories of him will live on not only in us, but for generations yet to come, through all those he has positively touched. Michael lived his life to the fullest. He loved and was loved, and his flame shall burn on. May he rest in peace and God willing someday we will meet again.

I can't believe that it was nine years ago that I dragged two little boys into ECKI. One eager to be a karate black belt and the other not able to look an adult in the eye. Michael worked diligently with all of us. He helped DJ focus and study to reach his goal; he helped Parker find his confidence; and he helped me with the trials and tribulations of getting two boys through the challenges of becoming a black belt. I'm not sure we ever thanked him properly. Michael's influence will always be a part of our family. To his family, who may read these messages......Thank you for sharing Michael with us. I had heard about the tragedy of Master DiPietro's death. Even though I am a student at the Edgemont location, I still feel for him. He was such a great man, who accomplished so many goals in his short life. I remember seeing him at the Black Belt Graduation back in May. He had made a long speech about how he felt for his grads. My mom and I will try our best to support my instructor, Mr.DiPietro. I feel for him, too, to lose his own brother. Mr.DiPietro was my instructor for over 2 years (which means I am a red belt). My mom was trying to help Mr. DiPietro find alternative treatments for his brother. May you rest in peace, Master DiPietro! - Alice Tamayev

We did not have to privilege of knowing Master DiPietro personally, but I did get to watch him at work when he came to the Edgemont school to run a belt test for our son's Little Dragons Class. He was gentle and encouraging with these very little "Tang Soo Do Warriors," but he also made it very clear that he wanted them to push past their limitations and do their best. I was riveted for the entire hour. Now, I know where ECKI's values and spirit all began. Our prayers and love are with the DiPietro, Stumm, and ECKI families. The Rimple Family

Mike and I here friends long ago. We trained together at Shin karate and within a short time had become very close friends. Myself, Mike, and Brian (Master Fisher) spent allot of time doing what teens do and I realize now how fortunate I was to have spent a handful of years being able to call Mike a friend. I had heard of Mike's sickness a few months back and reached out to him. I feel blessed and privileged to have had the opportunity to get to know Mike and Abby again after all these years. As all of us feel, I only wish that there was more time to spend with him. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you and I will hold close to my heart the time with Mike that I was blessed with having over the last few months! The Rossi Family

I did not know this wonderful young man, husband, and father personally but through his good friends, Kim and Michael Spina. He was so respected and loved by them. I knew of his illness through them and offered prayers for him. Attending his funeral mass today was an honor and privilege. The outpouring of love was overwhelming from family, friends, and students. Having just had a loss of my own, our Dad, recently, my heart was overwhelmed, but lifted up by the love in church today. It so moved me, that I visited the Hospice where our Dad passed away today after mass, just to feel closer to him. I feel proud to have been a part of saying farewell to this wonderful young man. My sincere sympathy to his family, friends, and students who will miss him so. Dear and gentle soul, rest in peace. E. Gallion

Our thoughts are with all of the DiPietro's at this time. Master DiPietro has touched so many lives and at this time we can only imagine the great loss you as a family have experienced. There are few people in a 100 year lifetime who will have had the opportunity or desire to effect so many lives as Master DiPietro has. Our family is grateful to have stumbled upon him through karate and will remember him as the great teacher, role model, and person that he was. The Mazzulo's

Although his passing is something awful, after much reflection, I have come to consider myself and everyone else who knew Master DiPietro incredibly fortunate. For me, ten of my short eighteen years have been shared with a man who provided guidance, wisdom, teachings, and inspiration in a way that no one else could. Since I was only eight years old, I have had a mentor and role model who is still admired by children and adults alike. In that way I am incredibly fortunate; for some people go their entire lives without ever having encountered an individual so powerful, influential, and loving. Even in this time of sadness, I feel enormously grateful for the time I was granted with him and the teachings that he passed on to me. Thank you, Master DiPietro, for living your life in a way that touched so many others. - Paul Rotter

Ms. Westraad, Mr. Stumm and everyone at EKCI Although my children haven’t taken karate in over a year, we learned of Master DiPietro’s illness and passing and I just want to say my whole family is truly saddened. He was taken way too soon and had so much to live for. Please extend our deepest sympathies to the entire DiPietro and Stumm families. We came to the viewing last night and it was so crowded we couldn’t get in. Christina said “that’s how much he was loved” Again our condolences. He was too young. My deepest and most sincere condolences to Master DiPietro's and Mr. Stum's families. I am completely devastated at the loss of such an inspiring teacher and leader. He will be truly missed. Master DiPietro was a young man who was wise beyond his years. His constant words of support and encouragement have helped me through some trying times in my life. When I had gone through my own scare with cancer, he helped me focus on the most important thing in my life- my family. He has had such an impact on how I look at life now. I wish I had the time to let him know just how much his words and strength helped me through such a difficult time. His strength, courage and his love for his family, his school and his students are a true inspiration to me as it is for many. I am sure his family is well aware of the amazing person he was, but they should know how truly loved and respected he was. It is with my deepest regrets that I will not be able to be there to pay my final respects to a man who has touched my life in such a positive way. I feel honored & blessed to have crossed paths which such an amazing person. He will live on in our memories & hearts forever. With much love and respect, Katerina Cozza

We only knew Micheal DiPietro as Master DiPietro, the karate instructor. In this role he was both a mentor and a role model. He was encouraging and supportive, but he was also strict and disciplined in his classes. Master DiPietro was a dynamic and charismatic force in the studio. The kids respected and admired him from the moment they entered the program. He instilled in his students a sence of self-confidence and determination to reach their goals. He was the driving force behind Alex reaching his goal of black belt. As an instructor Master DiPietro touched the lives of hundreds of children and adults. If the true length of your life is measured by the number of lives you touch, Michael DiPietro managed to live 100 years in his short 32 years on earth. He will be missed, but more importantly he will be remembered by the hundreds of students who learned far more than karate skill from their devoted teacher. They learned how to set goals, how to work hard to reach these goals and to never give up. These are lessons for a lifetime from Master DiPietro that will never be forgotten. Anne and Alex Servin

Master DiPietro was a remarkable teacher, mentor, instructor, and man. He not only taught me the physical part of karate, he taught me the mental part of karate as well. He taught me to become a dedicated, hard-working, confident, and willing person. Throughout the obstacles I had to overcome, Master DiPietro was there for me. He pushed me, even when I was unwilling, to meet my full potential, and I sincerely am appreciative for all that Master DiPietro has done for me. To the DiPietro family, please know that our family has been praying before the Lord for sustaining grace for you during this time. Our deepest sympathy for your loss. I recall a meeting I had with Michael regarding my son at ECKI. We began chatting about his newborn son. He beamed with pride even though he was clearly exhausted! Yet after the meeting, he went out to teach a bunch of wiggling 5&6 years olds with a cool & easy, loving authority that I lose after my first cup of morning coffee. I hope his children and students will treasure the content of his character. - The Beale Family

I did not know Mike, but I think that I may have met him at Val and Rob's wedding (Val is my big sis, Rob Massaroni(RIP)) Val talked to Mike about a month or so ago and he was just the sweetest. He was really looking out for her. She was so upset when she got off the phone with him. I was supposed to go to a fundraiser for him in August, but unfortunatley God had other plans. Mrs. DiPietro, Val knows what you're going through and it is the worst thing and I would never want anyone to have to feel that. For evryone, just remember, Rob was waiting for him and they are together again. We will all eventualyy be together with them again. They will help each other where ever it is they are. Rest in Peace Mike...<3 I know what it is like to lose someone you love so dearly, but you have to let out the hurt before you can start to get your life going again. Dont hold the hurt in just to say youre strong. let it out and live everyday as if it were your last. Sincerely, someone who feels the hurt too. <3

We can not express how sad we feel about the loss of our old friend. Michael played a big part in the meeting of my husband and myself at the WTSDA world tournament in San Diego, CA. This week I find myself remembering the fun trips to all of the tournaments we attended together, as well as the fun weekends to the shore, and skiing in the mountains. When I view the slideshow it breaks my heart to know how much he will be missed. For those who knew him or where touched by his presence the world is not as bright a place without Master Dipietro. It is a inconceivable loss for all who will come through the doors of E.C.K.I. and not meet him. When I walked through the doors of the studio I could't stand on one foot or stand still to save my life. Now I have a 2nd degree black belt and can do things I would never have imagianed I was capable of. When I attained black belt Master Dipietro reminded me of this. He would talk to me about how we where both the middle child. It is the memories like this that have always made me smile but for know they make me smile and cry. He was wise far beyond his years. The way he carried himself in public as well as in the karate school was an example to all. His memory wil live on in all he taught and in the martial arts family he created. E.C.K.I. is not just a building or a name it is a family, one that master Dipietro started and that has grown for over ten years and will grow for manny more. But now there is a spot missing in that family that can never be filled, and it is a tribute the man who occupied this spot. there can never be a replacement for master Dipietro. I will always strive train with excellence you wanted, your Student Joe Conte

Michael DiPietro mastered the physical demands and theory of karate. More impressive, was his command of audience and acceptance of responsibility. I’ll forever remember the 26 year old kid who recognized I was Alex’s father after one class. Moreover, he wouldn’t dismiss Alex from class until he saw Vanessa or me in the studio, ready to take him home. When Alex’s motivation slipped in school, a brief discussion always provided the spark to improve school performance. No job was ever beneath him, whether it was washing the studio windows, or pulling the cheese off a slice of Brother’s Pizza for a birthday party guest who preferred his pizza without cheese. We appreciate the example he set, and celebrate his life. - Greg Horne

In 2003, after eating pizza at Brothers and watching the karate students through the window, my son announced that he would like to take up karate. We walked into ECKI and met with Master DiPietro and Jared began his journey that will hopefully continue to his Black Belt in the next year. From a shy, nervous kindergardener when he started karate, Jared has become a confident, proud, and strong 5th grader and we owe much of that to his relationship with karate, Master DiPietro and the ECKI staff. Although at times, Michael thought that I was a "chatty" mom in his lobby and I thought he was too firm with his "contracts" we had a terrific relationship that always included a conversation about his 2 sons and my 3 sons! The loss to all of us in the ECKI family is devastating and my thoughts are with his immediate family. We know that Jared will continue his accomplishments in karate and will think of Master DiPietro as an inspiration to get through the difficult days. Michelle Silberglied

Words cannot convey the sadness we feel in our hearts and souls over the loss of Master DiPietro. Our greatest sympathies are for Loretta, Michael & steven, Abby and the boys, Mr Stumm and Ms Westraad. We are with you in our thoughts every day as we have been from the moment we found out about Master DiPietro's diagnosis. I read this quote somewhere and I think that it is very fitting today. "The length of your education is less important than its breadth, and the length of your life is less important than its depth." It is so obvious by the impact that Master DiPietro had on so many and especially how he played such an important role in the lives of children that although he died too young his life had much depth. We are always here to help in any way we can. We are so sorry. The Hoyle Family

During my first conversation with Master DiPietro in 1999 he asked me if I was going to have a problem calling someone younger than myself 'Sir'. Master DiPietro, Sir, I have never had a problem doing so, and will always do so, for you were the incarnation of the words 'respect' and 'excellence'. I have missed your daily presence dearly. Master DiPietro was an inspiration to all that met him. He was patient, understanding and dedicated on helping you to discover the best in yourself not just in karate but in life. I wandered into ECKI in 1999, as the 159 student, with the intention of taking karate as a exercise - I never had plans on pursuing a black belt let alone anything above. But something in me changed on that journey and through all of my injuries, Master DiPietro has been there quietly pushing me to do my best. I know the reason I continued was because of him and his quite way of inspiring me. Although your physical self has left us, your spirit has not and never will. I will always remember and miss you, your faithful (and always injured) student. - Gail Dodge (#037037)

To Abby and the entire Dipietro Family, Michael was the Best of the Best. I am an old friend of Michael and Abby's, well they were my teachers at the Philadelphia W.T.S.D.A, and the original E.C.D.T/S.W.A.T. Team, eventhough I was younger than Michael, he was always there to push me forward, he believed in all of his students, and fellow classmates. Only The Best A heart of gold stopped beating, Two shining eyes at rest. God broke our hearts to prove He only takes the best. God knows you had to leave us, But you did not go alone~ For part of us went with you, The day he took you Home. To some you are forgotton, To others just the past. Over the past several days since hearing the tragic news, I have been so incredibly sad. I wonder why Master DiPietro's death has had such an impact on me. Afterall, my son, Cole, is enrolled in Mr. DiPietro's class in Edgemont and I have only met and/or seen Master DiPietro a few times. Over the course of a lifetime you don't meet many people that are able to bring out the best in you. Someone you respect, trust, consider a positive role model, teacher, a good influence, or an inspiration. To my wife and I, Master DiPietro was all of this and more. Its hard to find a more down to earth, humble, caring person. He always greeted us with a smile and a handshake or a tap on the shoulder. It has been a pleasure knowing him and an honor to be taught and trained by him. There is a Native American saying, "Our life is a gift from the Creator, our gift back to the Creator is what we do with our lives". God must surely be pleased with Master DiPietro's gift. Not only was Michael a good friend of Rob’s, but as a martial artist he was someone that my brother learned from and respected very much. When preparing for Region 8 tournaments, the World Championship, or black belt and Master’s testings, there was a small handful of people that Rob would call on for advice and help in his preparations…Master DiPietro was one of them. Michael was very unselfish, generous with his time, and always willing help whether it be critiquing a form prior to a tournament, or sparring with him leading up to the World Championship. In the months following Rob’s passing, Michael was facing huge challenges of his own, yet he found time on numerous occasions to call me (and my family) to see how we were doing. His caring and support during a difficult time in our lives, at an equally difficult time in his, will never be forgotten and will always be very much appreciated by my family and I. Our thoughts and deepest sympathies go out to his wife Abby and the boys, his brother Steve, his parents, and the rest of his family. Michael was a great guy and he will truly be missed by all of us. –Chris Massaroni & Family

Since the first class that our son had with Master DiPietro at 5 years old, he has been such an important person in his life. He was very influential in keeping him on track and focusing on his goal of becoming a "BLACK BELT" He has achieved his goal and will always be greatful to Master DiPietro for his guidance and support throughout his many years at ECKI. Our prayers are with his entire family at this most difficult time. He accomplished so much in his life and touched so many people. If anyone can take something from this terrible tragedy it is to live your life the way he did and treat people like he did. I can only hope that hearing all of these wonderful things that he has done and all the lives he has touched will in some way comfort his family. He was an exceptional man and will truly be missed by our family. Rest in Peace. The Capuano's........Anthony, Debbie, AJ, Jacklyn & Joseph

Our hearts go out to the DiPietro family, as well as the Stumm family and the entire ECKI community. Master DiPietro will truly be missed by our entire family, not only because he was a great leader and teacher, who always seemed to know instinctively which buttons to push to gently encourage any given student, but because above all else, he was truly a good man. God must have a very special job for him, to take him from us so soon. My sons have benefited greatly from their time at ECKI, and we've always had a very secure feeling knowing that we were putting them in his hands, even if it was only for a few hours a week. The entire staff-- his brother Steven, Mr. Stumm, Ms. Westraad and Mr. Hopkins, have always been very approachable, kind and helpful during our time with them. They've been dealt a heavy blow, and our condolences go out to them as well. God bless you, Master DiPietro, and thank you for all you've done for us. Your parents, brother and sister, your lovely wife and your beautiful sons will always be in our thoughts and prayers. The Simmons Family (Dan, Marion, Sean, Patrick and Colin)

To know Master DiPietro was undoubtedly, a privilege. He was an inspirational mentor, teacher, and friend to all the students at E.C.K.I. I will always remember him as a positive influence on my life and miss the little things that made him special: the way he was always watching, even if he wasn't teaching at the time, the way he would stand on the wall and give you that "look" if you were talking or moving around on the mirrors, his appreciation for hard work, the nicknames he gave his students, how he always said "Hello," his support during my 1st and especially 2nd degree testing, his understanding, his jokes, everything about him that shaped the type of family studio E.C.K.I. is today. To say that I have trained under Master DiPietro for 7 1/2 years is an honor and I will never forget the time he spent with us. Katie Conte

Our deepest sympathy is extended to the entire DiPietro Family. We think of how influential Master DiPietro has been to all of us for the last seven years. He's been a mentor to both of our boys from the first day they became students at East Coast Karate Institute. To this day, our boys follow his words on how they carry themselves everyday: respect, honor, and dignity. Master DiPietro showed compassion to our boys like no other instructor they've ever had. This was quite a visible characterstic that we admired greaty. You will ALWAYS be remembered for the courage, positive attitude, words of wisdom, and passion exhibited towards our family. We've been blessed and fortunate to have learned from the wonderful man and father you were. Your spirit will live forever with our family as we reflect on the fond memories of our one-and-only instructor, Master DiPietro. May you rest in peace and God bless Abby, Michael, and Nicco. Master DiPietro was a very good inspiration to all students who want to become black belts. For me it will be extremely hard to find a master as nice, caring, and inspirational as Master DiPietro. Everytime I look at his picture on the wall at the studio next to the flags I will miss him. I really wish he was here today and that I could see him one last time. My only regret is that he won't be here when I get my black belt but I know he will be watching over me.

Dear DiPietro Family, These words I have read are very beautiful and powerful of Michael. We all have been so blessed by knowing him. My family is originally from South Philly so when we met Michael it felt like home, family. He always took special care of my son. He took care of me too. I was always late for something and he was always gracious to me. Here I thought it was because we were from South Philly together. Now I see it was because that is how Michael treated everybody- like family, like they were the only one, special. You are all in our prayers, Love from the Vitola family.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Mrs. DiPietro, the children, Mr. DiPietro, Mr. Stumm, their family and friends. Master DiPietro was a special person. He was not just an instructor to our children. He was a mentor, an excellent role model and friend. Over the past 10 years he has helped develop Tommy into the fine young man he is today. He instilled values and always promoted a positive attitude and to be the best you can be. When Alyssa started taking karate he made her feel welcome and told her she could be just like her big brother if she worked hard. Alyssa was so proud to be part of the karate family. We are all so lucky and blessed to have had Master DiPietro in our lives. He will be greatly missed but we will never forget the wonderful gifts he left with us. East Coast Karate Institute will be forever under his heavenly guidance, and thru his instructors, family and friends more will receive the knowledge and wisdom they have been given to share. Master DiPietro Accomplished so many things in the span of time he was with us here. His influence will carry on long past his visit with us; which is just for a moment in the scale of eternity. We will miss him as his fun and loving personality attracted people like a magnet. Much of his success came from his ability to make others feel significant and valued in his presence. Our world needs more people who have the courage to lead by example and his life was dedicated to building great students and instructors via martial arts training. The students and instructors he created and inspired will carry on long after his personal efforts and his standards will be a symbol of excellence for generations to come. As one of his instructors it was an honor to have him as a student. You did not have tell him twice as he would seek and take advice. He was a model student the kind that make you feel proud to be a teacher. I recently had a meeting with Grandmaster Shin to submit a written request for his Promotion to 5th Degree Black Belt and the Grandmaster said he was ready to approve it immediately just a matter of when and where; and that we could schedule a time. That speaks volumes about the respect earned form our leader the Grandmaster who holds him in the highest regard. We will miss our friend and we will admire his work for years to come as his works will be carried on by his faithful students staff for future generations. Master John L. Godwin

Five years ago we enrolled our son Michael in ECKI. We were quickly impressed with Master DiPietro's ability to not only make a strong connection with his students but also with the families of his students. In a brief amount of time our whole family was actively involved at ECKI. In class, he pushed us hard and challenged us to be the best that we could be. But he also had that unique ability to sense when you were getting frustrated with trying to execute a particular technique or were becoming overwelmed by the intensity of a class. It was then that he would flash that smile and offer words of advice and encouragement. You immediately felt better. He didn't just teach the 5 codes and 7 tenets of Tang Soo Do......he lived them. He led by example. We will remember him not just as an excellent martial artist, leader and mentor but also as a friend and a heck of a nice guy. He leaves behind a legacy of being a positive force in the lives of many, many people. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family. Debi, Jerry and Michael Wesner.

Dear Family, I have known Michael since 1987. We were classmates through MAster Godwin and fellow competitors throught the years. Michael was a perfectionist with his TAng Soo Do and I have always admired that the most about him. Our personalities were almost identical as far as what we wanted to see from ourselves and our students. I saw Michael as a great family man, a great friend, and the best that Tang Soo Do as to offer. If anyone wants to know what kind of person and martial artist to be, all they have to do is follow the great example of Master Michael DiPietro. Tang Soo, Master E. Watters

I was terribly saddened to read Jolene's email announcing Master DiPietro's passing. My daughter Vicky started with Master DiPietro when she was 7 after receiving a coupon in her Halloween bag for a "free month." I didn't know anything about karate - having never taken any myself - but we thought we'd try it out. Master DiPietro encouraged her throughout her 9 karate years all the way to her 2nd degree black belt and for that, I am extrememly grateful. When my step-son, Tony, came to live with us in 6th grade, his first thought was to join karate. All of the children that we've watched grow into adults and instructors over the years have been greatly blessed by Michael's instruction and influence. I've met many other parents and have made friends without even taking a class. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Abby and those beautiful boys, Mr. DiPietro, Mr. Stumm, Jolene, Duncan, Mr. Hopson, and all of the students who have passed under the graceful teachings from Master DiPietro. - Ginny Lockwood, Vicky Smith, Ted & Tony LeonGuerrero.

Words cannot express the sorrow that is felt with the loss of such a wonderful and committed man. There was an energy that came from him that kept the kids focused and in awe of his talents. He had a way of just looking at them that made them want to do better at forms or to achieve their goals that were set for them. He took all of the students under his wing and felt personally responsible for their betterment. It was a well known fact that if you could get through one of his blackbelt pre-tests...the association test would be a breaze. When my son got his first blackbelt...the venue wa a horrible place...there was no air conditioning and all of the kids were showing some sort of dehydration. He came up to me and asked if Bobby was ok...I didn't even know that he was watching him...he took him aside and made sure that he was hydrated and iced down...did it himself. In that moment I knew that the students were more than students to him...he watched over him like a father would a son. When Bobby was testing for his second Dan...Mike was diagnosed and going through treatments...noone expected to see him at the association test...and there he was...you knew that he was tired, sore and should have been home sleeping or resting...but he was there...he made it his business to meet with all of the kids and make sure that they were ok...It was who he was. He was a strong force in the studio and in life. He will be missed and is heartbreaking that he had to fight the battle that he fought. We all know that he won though..he is at peace and training at a different level now. I want Abbie and his family to know that we appreciated that you shared him with us and we will keep him and you in our hearts and prayers. Barb Anthony (Bobby's mom)

Our son Andrew Dunn started at ECKI in August of 1997. He was 13 yrs old and we were trying to find something that he could be confident in. My husband and I were very impressed with Master DiPietro's calm manner yet firm hand. A perfect match for our son. Andrew went on to become a 2nd degree black belt and even worked as an instructor for a time after college. Master DiPietro was a HUGE factor in who our son has become as a 24 year old man. Our most vivid memory of him is when he was in a tournament and stabbed himself in his leg with the sword. Blood came thru his white pants and he kept on performing thru the pain. My personal memory, which meant so much to me, is when Andrew dislocated his shoulder during a Black Belt Ceremony performance and Master DiPietro and Steven came and sat with me at the hospital until Andrew was taken care of. I'm sure they had better things to do but the time they took touched my heart. Thank you Mr. and Mrs. DiPietro for raising your son into a man that has touched so many lives. Abby...I'm still praying for you and the boys. May God hold you in His arms and bring joy to your life again thru the life Michael lived. With much love, Melinda & Denny Waldman

I have had the honor of knowing Master DiPietro for many years. As a child, I remember watching the East Coast Demo Team videotapes and wishing that I could be as talented. Whether it was at a tournament, Black Belt Camp, or Black Belt Testing, I remember that seeing Master DiPietro made me want to try harder. For a man to have such a presence on a student who was not even his own, is remarkable. I believe that Master DiPietro was put into our lives to provide inspiration - inspiration as a martial artist, a teacher, a husband, a father, a brother, and a friend. Over the last 15 years that I have been a part of this Association, I have not heard anything but total admiration and kind words about Master DiPietro. And over the last 8 years that Miss Jolene has been my best friend, I have seen and understood a side of Master DiPietro that has been one of a great man who succeeded in all aspects of his life. To the students of Master DiPietro - how lucky you were to have had such an amazing man as a leader! And how lucky Master DiPietro was to have equally amazing students! And to the family of Master DiPietro - may you find comfort in knowing that this man has touched so many lives in a positive way. I pray that God is with you during your time of grieving, and may Master DiPietro's memory be eternal. Christina Mrkonja-Sheleheda

“Perhaps they are not stars, but rather openings in heaven where the love of our lost ones pour through and shine down upon us to let us know they are happy.” (Eskimo saying) I love this saying and would like to think Master DiPietro is one of the brightest stars shining down on his family, friends and all the lucky ones fortunate enough to call him "Master". My daughter Bevyn would not be the complete person she is today if we had not walked into his studio six years ago. We met a man who would undoubtedly change our lives for the better and now with his passing he has become an inspiration to make sure we all continue to reach for our goals! My last conversation with Michael was about his son's T-ball games and how much fun he had watching the little guys run around. He had the best smile when he talked about his boys. I hope they feel his warmth and courage forever. His love for his sons, his wife, family, friends, karate and life itself was evident, his strong love will live on.... he has enriched the lives of everyone who knew him! God said to Master DiPietro, "Michael, come see me", and Master DiPietro went. A great teacher was needed and Master DiPietro took the job. A person becomes a great teacher by being a great student. Master DiPietro took every opportunity to learn, whether he was teaching a little dragons class or judging a black belt test, his dedication to everything he believed in clearly showed. Those who have had the chance to learn from Master DiPietro have gained something that is impossible to learn from a book. His insight into human nature, his kindness towards others, his desire to master all he did are what made me proud to have Master DiPietro as a role model for my daughter... and as my role model as well. The greatest thing that I have learned from Master DiPietro is how to be a student. I will continue to learn his teachings in all that I do. -- Paul, Jennifer, and Evelyn Maguire

Master DiPietro is the type of person that you cannot use words to describe. There's no question that he lived a truly wonderful and influential life and that he was admired and respected by many people. When I was first informed about this loss, it really stunned me physically and emotionally. The love and spirit he expressed towards our organization is unmatched. He was not only my instructor of martial arts, he was also an enthralling role model. He put forth extreme effort to instill his knowledge and qualities into all his students that he so treasured. Master DiPietro taught us not only self-defense and self-confidence, but more importantly, he showed us an appreciation of life itself and the way all people should try to live their lives. He will live on in our hearts as we practice all the life lessons he taught us. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family. With deepest sympathy to all. Michael DiPietro has influenced so many lives. He truely was a disciple of Jesus. His integrity, enthusiasm, values and determination impacted everyone he came in contact with. It always amazed us how he knew everyone's name so quickly after starting karate. He had a little trouble telling our twins apart sometimes but he eventually got it right. What a remarkable man! We can't say enough about how he effected our lives. Master DiPietro always included everyone at East Coast Karate in his extended family. How amazing is that? We are all mourning your loss. God has now called you home Micheal. He felt your job was done here on this earth. No more pain. Rest in Peace. We love you. You will be missed. We will never forget you. The Stefankiewicz Family

The news of the passing of Master DiPietro has saddened our hearts tremendously. He was an inspiration and a blessing to both my wife and myself. He will continue to inspire all those who were instructed by him and those who are instructed by his students - and so he will live on. We ask God continually to pour out His healing grace, peace and mercy on all those who are sorrowful. Our prayers continue for Abby and the children, Master DiPietro's Parents, Steven, and Eddie. Master DiPietro was a great man who helped me in both Tang Soo Do and in my life outside of the studio. He showed me that I could do more than I thought I ever could. He taught me that, although I may want to quit, once I commit to something, I have to stick with it, for better or for worse. That kept me going in Tang Soo Do. Now, I am a black belt. And I can honestly say I wouldn't be where I am today without his help and guidance. You will be greatly missed, Master DiPietro, but you will not be forgotten, I will take your lessons with me wherever I go. RIP.

Master DiPietro, you have been a great master and teacher. If it wasn't for you I wouldn't have achieved the goals that I needed to reach my black belt, I will be testing soon and I dedicate it to you. I know you will not be there in person to see me get my black belt, but you will be there in spirit. You will always be in my heart, Rest In Peace. Your student Mary-Kate Gallagher(#127539)

There are no words that can fully express how fortunate and blessed our family is to have known Master DiPietro as a friend as well as one of the best karate instructors. He and his family have been a part of our family for over 6 years. No parent could ask for a child to have a better mentor than Master DiPietro. He has taught us all life long lessons based on experience and wisdom. Although our hearts feel a void, we know that Master DiPietro has peacefully joined God as an angel to watch over all of us. Our continued thoughts and prayers to the entire family. With all our love, The Vershinski Family

Master Mike DiPietro was an amazing man who had a great way with children. When my son started ECKI at 4 years old he was incredibly encouraging and gave my son the confidence to compete, good sportsmanship, an ability to focus, manners of a gentleman (most of the time:), and a love of physical fitness. These gifts, for which we all shared, will help 'Master Mike' live on in all of our lives. He left our kids with life lessons that were harder to be taught at home! Even when we left the studio and moved to Florida last year he made sure we had good connections to carry on our Tang Su Do studies. He will never be forgotten - thank God he leaves behind two beautiful children to carry on his legacy. Peace and love to family and friends of Master Michael DiPietro at this difficult time - Connie, Craig, Craigie & Heather Hudson.

Master DiPietro was an amazing person whom has impacted my life in more than just one way. I was inspired by his enthusiasm and spirit to push myself farther than I thought possible to get my blackbelt. He also became a close friend and teacher throughout the years I knew him. He will be missed very much by myself and my family. I hope that his family, friends, and his students can stay strong through this difficult time. I will keep everyone in my prayers, may he rest in peace. -♥ Amanda Bahara and family

My husband and I can never thank you enough Master DiPietro for all you have done for our daughter, Sydney. When she first came to your school she was 4 1/2 years old, very quiet and shy. Today she is 10 y/o and has just started testing for her Black Belt. The sad news of your passing hit us very hard and we will miss you terribly. Our thoughts and prayers are with your entire family at this time. Thank you for helping my daughter to become the strong, confident and motivated young lady she is today. God Bless you and your family. Love, The Gorman Family

God looked around his Garden and found an empty place. He then looked down upon his earth and saw your loving face. He put his arms around you and lifted you to rest. His Garden must be beautiful, he always takes the best. He knew that you were suffering, he knew you were in pain. And knew that you would never get well on earth again. He saw your path was difficult, he closed you tired eyes, He whispered to you "Peace be Thine" and gave you wings to fly. You've left us precious memories, your love will be our guide, You live on through your children, you're always by our side. It broke our hearts to lose you, but you did not go alone. For part of us went with you on the day God called you home

Master DiPietro was the best master, guider and friend a kid could ever know. When I heard the bad news I cried for an hour thinking how God could kill such a man. He always gave me hope when I needed it. I will shure miss him. It will never be the same at ECKI without him around. I thought I was going to quit karate when I got my black belt, but because of Master DiPietro I am now going til I can go no more. I am going to miss Master DiPietro. God bless you. Love, Matthew B. Master DiPietro truly cared about our son. When he switched to brown belt, he was a little intimidated by the more advanced sparring. He was scared, and ready to quit. Master DiPietro worked with him one-on-one for two sessions and had my son turned around. He was ready to join the class again. We witnessed that caring and guidance many times with other children. My son now has an angel looking over him, always encouraging him to do his best and be strong.

Almost 11 years ago when the opportunity arose to move to the USA my family was disappointed about leaving family, friends and sporting activities. One of the promises I made to Jolene and Duncan was that we would find a karate school that espoused our values in terms of what karate is all about. ECKI had just opened, and when I visited to evaluate the karate school I was very pleased to meet Michael DiPietro the instructor/owner who had exactly the positive attitude and dedication to excellence we were looking for. Very quickly we were immersed into ECKI and it felt like we had been there amongst friends for a long time, the transition to the USA was made so much easier. The positive influence of Master Michael DiPietro on the personal growth of Jolene and Duncan has been appreciated by Linda and I. The many championships/competitions we attended and the pleasure of sharing the social events with Master Michael DiPietro will not be forgotten. In memory of Master Michael DiPietro, there are hundreds of children and adults who have benefitted positively through their ECKI association and will continue to be thankful. May he rest in peace – God bless the DiPietro family and friends. (Mark Westraad)

We were truly blessed to see a man who took every opportunity to teach life lessons. His influence, example, and spirit have been imparted into countless numbers of people - both young and old. If we live out those lessons that he gave to us then he will always be with us. And I take comfort in knowing that I will see him again. - V. Cyr

Words cannot ever fully express how much we'll miss our friend. My prayer is that everyone will realize how blessed we were in having him amongst us for the time we did, and to live with the same love and courage he showed, especially in his final days. Rob Kloss "Brothers, we do not want you to be ignorant about those who fall asleep, or to grieve like the rest of men, who have no hope. We believe that Jesus died and rose again and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in Him." - 1 Thessalonians 4:13-14
